snow day

ok for the sake of honesty it is Saturday so it really isn’t a snow day in the sense that I miss school or work. but then I am retired so every day is a snow day with no work just play.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

there is snow falling right now and it has exceded what the weathermen told us to expect. early this morning we shoveled about 4″ and it is still coming down steadily. but it doesn’t matter I love the snow & the dog absolutely adores the snow.

this morning we met a whole family out and fishing off the point of the bay we live in. they had caught several northerns and were having so much fun in the snow racing from one tip up to the next to see what they had caught. it has warmer up quite a bit – it is 16* that is up more than 30 degrees from last week end.

after getting home I decided a little snow play was in order so I grabbed a dye pot from the shed and mixed some soda ash to soak some yarn & fabric in. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAafter the soak I twisted the fabric loosely and put it in a strainer. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAon top of this I layered a skein of corriedale yarn.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAnext I gathered some of the abundant snow from the yard and brought it inside. after dumping all the snow on top of the fabric and yarn I placed my measuring cup in the bottom of my dye pot because when the snow melts I don’t want the fiber sitting in the dye water.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAthen I placed the strainer in the pot and sprinkled the dye on top. I used blue and red and can’t wait to see what happens as it melts.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAearlier this week I started a jar of dye with layers of dried onion skins and silk hankies that I poured boiling water over. I have let this sit all week and occasionally taken the lid off the jar and popped it in the microwave to heat it up. during the summer I leave jars like this out and rely on the sun to heat them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAso I pulled out a silk hankie and am pleased with the color. the problem will be finding an area to dry the hankies before knitting from them

The dye sounds like good fun to me, but I wouldn’t know where to start. I have a whole bunch of kool-aid in my cupboard, having bought it to do some dying, but never got around to it. It will wait for spring when I can hang it outside. The onion skins I think I will start saving now, been wanting to try that too. Please post pictures of the yarn and fabric, can’t wait to see the outcome.
