spring is here & I feel like singing in the arrival!!
My Mom and I have been working on these hats for the past couple of weeks. The hat is a super fun project and made our afternoon downright cheery. the pattern Musica is designed by DeborahTomasello is a delightful pattern to knit.
you may notice the first hat is blue and white instead of having the traditional black keys. the first hat was our very important test hat. we knit it on a size #7 circular needle – it will fit the person we have it in mind for but for the second hat we dropped down to a size #5 needle.
I also knit a swatch before starting the first hat. the swatch was rather important because we worked this hat from worsted weight yarn instead of the finger weight that the pattern Musica called for. after knitting a swatch and measuring we decided to cast on 112 sts for hat #1. we worked only 4 repeats of the pattern and then had to alter the crown a bit. see those long afternoons spent in Mrs. Wolff’s math class did pay off(and just maybe a little more math sunk in than I thought or my grades reflected).
Mom and I worked the hat in a round robin style passing it back and forth between us. I worked the cast on and Mom ribbed. then I established the first row of the piano keyboard and Mom finished the keys. finally I grabbed the hat and started the stranded notes that seemed to dance around the crown of the hat as the stitches grew.
and believe me – Mom and I really needed some cheery singing in the form of our knitting the last 2 weeks. while I was in Michigan the temperatures dipped to 30* below and that wasn’t including the wind chill. we had frozen pipes twice and don’t even get me started on the story of the icicle mishap.
don’t get me wrong I am not complaining because it was awesome and beautiful and I sometimes miss living on a Great Lake but man oh man what a chilly week!!!
